Scanned photograph album of early 20th Century images of Goldsmiths University

Description

Scanned copy of a photograph album brought into Goldsmiths special collections for digitization by Vicky Annand (member of Goldsmiths staff). We believe she bought it.
Original Photographer: Unknown
Original owner/creator of the album: Unknown
Scanned by: Rebecca Randall
Scanned tiffs at 600dpi of 45 pages, including front and back cover.
File size 3.46 GB tiffs, 241MB jpegs, 9.5MB multi-page PDF.
The only metadata we currently have is what is embedded in the files, e.g exif data, though we hope to add more descriptive and provenance information about the photograph album later as we research it.  As the photographs are pasted into the album we are unable to see if there is anything written on the back without damaging the album.
The nature of a lot of the photographs, and the fact that they were made into postcards that appear again and again in multiple albums of approximately the same age in our archive would indicate that they were produced for Goldsmiths (as work for hire?) possibly for publicity purposes, and so the copyright should belong to the university.

Issues brainstorm

  • The original album is fragile and valuable.
  • Unwieldy file sizes of large TIFF collections.
  • Extracting metadata to accompany the images.
  • Checksums and validation.
  • Migration.
  • Copyright/IPR.
  • Keeping metadata and data together.
  • Switching between various machines and software, e.g. mac and pc.
  • Staff performing preservation activities may not have detailed IT knowledge, initial preservation activities, such as validation need to be simple and easily performed.
