*ISIS NeXus Data *

[NeXus |http://www.nexusformat.org/]is a common data format for neutron, x-ray and muon science. It is developed as an international standard by scientists and programmers representing major scientific facilities in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America in order to facilitate greater cooperation in the analysis and visualisation of neutron, x-ray and muon data.

*Description*

This particular collection of NeXus files are scientific data, generated from [ISIS|http://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/] in the [Science and Technology Facilities Council. |http://www.stfc.ac.uk/] ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments, often described as ‘super-microscopes’. It supports a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology. It is the most productive research centre of its type in the world.

*{_}NeXus data files contain four types of entity: data groups, data fields, attributes, and links._*

*{_}Data Groups{_}*

Data groups are like folders that can contain a number of fields and/or other groups.

*{_}Data Fields{_}*

Data fields can be scalar values or multidimensional arrays of a variety of sizes (1-byte, 2-byte, 4-byte, 8-byte) and types (characters, integers, floats). In HDF, fields are represented as HDF Scientific Data Sets (also known as SDS).

*{_}Data Attributes{_}*

Extra information required to describe a particular group or field, such as the data units, can be stored as a data attribute.

*{_}Links{_}*

Links are used to reference the plottable data from NXdata when the data is provided in other groups such as NXmonitor or NXdetector.

_ISIS data management policy (_ the full policy is available online _[here|http://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/user-office/data-policy11204.html]__ )_

 1. General principles

1.1 This data management policy pertains to the curation of and access to experimental raw data and metadata collected and / or stored at the ISIS facility.

1.2 Acceptance of this policy is a condition of the award of beamtime at ISIS.

*{_}1.3 Users must not attempt to access, exploit or distribute raw data or metadata unless they are entitled to do so under the terms of this policy._*

1.4 Deliberate infringements of the policy may lead to denial of access to ISIS raw data or metadata.
