Virtual Box Legacy Windows Environment
Detailed description
In order to view the material from the Dutch National Archive, I decided to try to create a virtual machine with the appropriate software from the late nineties, specifically a Virtual Box VM with:
- Windows 98
- Netscape Communicator 4.7
- Wordperfect 5.1 (DOS)
- Word 95
I'm going to document the process below as it might save somebody a little pain in future:
Setting up a usable Windows 98 VM in Virtual Box proved reasonably challenging. Installation was straightforward (the SE edition of 98 was the first to come with a bootable CD). Virtual Box booted from the ISO and the installation was complete in a few minutes. Unfortunately the machine ran horribly slowly at first, and a little reading revealed that this was due to the installs interpretation of the VB environment, specifically the APIC settings. Full details are explained on a VirtualBox forum here
