This page shows the results of a comparative analysis of a selection of PDFs from the Adobe Acrobat Engineering website
. The current analysis is limited to the following subset of PDFs that are hosted there:
1. all files in the General section of the Font Testing category;
2. all files in the Classic Multimedia section of the Multimedia & 3D Tests category.
3. a selection of files from the 3D section of the Multimedia & 3D Tests category.
4. all files in the File Attachment Testing category.
These files were analysed with the Preflight component of Adobe Acrobat (using the PDF/A-1b profile), and the Apache Preflight PDF/A-1 validator, which is part of the PDFBox library. Files in the Font Testing and Classic Multimedia categories were analysed with both tools; the remaining files were only analysed with Apache Preflight. The table below lists the software versions used:

Scope and objectives
The general scope of this work is to investigate to what extent Apache Preflight can be used for detecting features in PDF documents that are a potential preservation risk. Examples are:
- Encryption
- Non-embedded fonts
- External references
- Multimedia content that may rely on external resources.
The specific aim of this analysis of the Acrobat Engineering files is to get a better idea of:
- Apache Preflight's ability to detect such features in complex documents, and
- the range of error messages that are produced by Apache Preflight.
Since we have no real ground truth on the the features that are present in these PDFs, the output of Adobe Acrobat Preflight is provided as an approximate substitute.
